I don't think it's Jacob. That's just too on the nose. Everyone already knows that Jacob is this great presence, good or bad, so why would there be an ambiguous riddle about a guy that all of the Others and the Ilana & Co already know about?

I think the Who or What that does lie in the Shadow of the Statue will either be related to what happened between Locke, Fake Locke, Ben and Jacob under the remnants of the Tawaret statue, or the only other logical answer, Jack.

I was just thinking whether or not Ilana was touched by Jacob. My current thinking is that those touched by Jacob will retain their memories when time resets.
Wouldn't it be crazy if Ilana's flashback was actually a Flashback from a previous iteration? She had leprosy or was horribly burned, but when time reset a time before, she retained her memories and was able to avoid her injuries. His gift of repeating time for her caused her devotion. So, he who lies in the shadow of the statue might not have happened yet, but did in a previous iteration.

please note that one person here has said that the answer to the riddle isn't necessarily HE who will save us, but could be a more generic THAT.

i wonder if instead of really killing Jacob, that the stabbing, flames, etc., actually FREED him in some way. perhaps he's been a caretaker of sorts for centuries, but he knows he's being replaced, so the Nemesis' victory is a hollow one. after all, given Locke isn't really Locke, it appears that it's possible to somehow change appearances or take over bodies. or, perhaps his death will summon some alien race that seeded the Earth at some point.

as far as the various languages -- Latin, greek, hiroglyphics, etc. -- this seems to me to be an effort to show that all of the world's cultures have a link to the island. that makes it universal and therefore above or linked to all religions. that would make this a good vs. evil battle for the ages

He could of been freed in a way that he has become unstuck from his Mortal Body, as Esau is with Locke.

I have yet to watch the last episode again, but I cannot help thinking that what lies beneath the shadow of the statue is everything: the beginning, the end, good and evil, etc.
A place of simbiosis (sorry, I cannot spell that word!).
I am gonna watch the episode again...
